In line with the Governments Basic Skills agenda, all soldiers are required to reach Level 1 and Level 2 in literacy and numeracy as they progress through their careers. All soldiers are assessed for basic reading, writing and mathematical skills at Recruiting offices before their selection and enlistment to the Army. At this point, a Basic Skills programme will be devised to raise their skills levels to those that are required by the Army. There is also help for those soldiers whose first language is not English. This way, all soldiers are trained operate effectively as well as gaining a firm basis for future development.
