Funding Boost for Town's Armed Forces Day

BEVERLEY’S Armed Forces Day is gearing up to be bigger and better than ever before.

Plans for this year’s event, to be held in the town centre on Sunday July 3, are well under way and organisers received an extra boost this week in the form of a £4,000 donation.

The Defence School of Transport (DST) at Leconfield is unable to take part in this year’s Armed Forces Day due to increased operational training pressures.

However, the school has stepped in with Beverley-based educational charity The Deflog VQ Trust to provide £4,000 necessary to guarantee the event will go ahead.

DST Commandant, Colonel Paul Ash said: “Both the Defence School of Transport and Deflog VQ Trust are committed to supporting the Beverley Armed Forces Day and although the school is not in a position this year to provide practical support we wanted to ensure that the event, which is enjoyed by the local community, has the necessary funding to go ahead.”

Deflog VQ Trust, which has provided the funding, was created at the Defence School of Transport in 1996 as a military team providing NVQs and apprenticeships to soldiers passing through the school on driver training courses.

It became an educational charity in 2005 and has now grown to become a National Training Provider, delivering over 2000 qualifications a year to Royal Marines, Army and RAF Personnel in the UK and Germany.

In 2006 the organisation acquired local logistics training company TIR Training Services Ltd, which has agreed to provide their mobile training facility for Armed Forces Day, complete with two state of the art truck driving simulators.

Paul Downey, Deflog's Chief Executive said "Deflog is a successful local company and as an educational charity working closely with Colonel Paul Ash and his staff at DST we were happy to be able to give something back to the local community and support the Armed Forces at the same time.”

A cheque for £4,000 was this week presented to the local SAAFA representative, Bernadette Grimes MBE, by Paul Downey and Colonel Paul Ash. The presentation was also attended by Chairman of the Beverley Armed Forces Day organising committee, David Elvidge, and Deflog management Christine Wright and Neil Searle.

The Ceremonial Events and Commemorations Team at the MOD has previously granted Beverley Armed Forces Day £4,000.

As well as all the usual exhibits and activities on the day, this year’s event will feature a fly past from a Tiger Moth, subject to weather conditions. Another of the main contributors will be elements of A Company of 4th Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, which is based at Wolfe Armoury on Norwood Far Grove. The Battalion’s Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Ian Crowley MC, is a former pupil of St Nicholas Primary School and Beverley Grammar School.

Beverley Armed Forces Day will be held on Sunday, July 3 from 9am to 5pm.

The charter will facilitate a better level of support for Regiment’s soldiers undergoing Apprenticeships and NVQs and should result in a much higher level of achievement and progression to higher qualifications.
